St John the Baptist Church was built in 1833. In 1848, it became the church for the newly formed parish of Leytonstone. . The churchyard is now closed to burials. The churchyard is surrounded by old iron railings that border a busy street. There is a wall at the back of the churchyard where headstones are found under trees and in infrequently mow;ed grass. The churchyard is not immaculate and signs of public use are obvious. However, it is part of the community. It hosts a rich natural environment and informs visitors about Leytonstone's local history, flora, and fauna. Placards are found throughout the churchyard that honor memories of citizens and loved ones and the diversity of nature.
